Welcome To Derry will be the prequel series to Andy Muschietti‘s IT films. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming horror show.

Earlier this year, it was announced via THR, that the upcoming prequel series, Welcome To Derry , had been officially given a “straight-to-series order”.

It was reported last year (via Variety), that the new show will be “an origin story for Pennywise the Clown” that will begin in the 1960’s and will lead up to 2017’s It: Part One.

Both It Chapter One (2017) and It Chapter Two‘s (2019) director Andy Muschietti and producer Barbara Muschietti are on board for the new It prequel show. The serving co-showrunners for the prequel series are Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman) and Brad Caleb Kane (“Black Sails” ). Fuchs is also reportedly the scriptwriter for the upcoming project, developing the story together with the Muschiettis (via Variety). According to THR, Andy Muschietti will direct “multiple episodes of the series, including the first episode”.

The Muschiettis are hugely passionate the about the story, having been avid readers of Stephen King’s novel. In a statement (via THR), the Muschiettis said:

“As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces. and “It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humour, humanity and horror.”

Warner Bros produced the two films, and Warner Bros. Television is also behind the upcoming series (Via Variety).

Where can I watch Welcome To Derry?

The prequel series will premiere on the HBO Max streaming service in 2024 (via Bloody Disgusting).

The Cast?

The confirmed cast for the Welcome to Derry series is Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (Watchmen), Chris Chalk (Perry Mason), and James Remar (Oppenheimer).

Will Bill Skarsgård be in Welcome To Derry?

Almost everything else seems in place for the show to succeed, including, the original director, producer, and the studio, but at the moment, one important ‘thing’ or shall we say person is still yet to be confirmed as part of the project.

Bill Skarsgård starred as the terrifying Pennywise in both Muschietti‘s It films. His performance was critically acclaimed and his portrayal hugely popular with audiences. However, it seems that he is not currently tied to the project.

In a recent interview with Jake’s Takes, Skarsgård reveals he is not, at the moment, involved in the upcoming project, and offered his advice to anyone taking up the role.

“We’ll see what they come up with and what they do with it. As of now, I’m not currently involved in it,” Skarsgård continues. “If someone else gets to do it, my advice would just be make it your own. Have fun with it. What I thought was so pleasurable about that character was how incredibly abstract he was. The book is really a gift that way.”

For continuity with the film series, it would make sense to get Bill Skarsgård back in his role as Pennywise, especially as his performance was one of the standout things about the movies.

Will there be an IT Chapter 3?

It Chapter One became the highest grossing R rated film of all time in 2017, finally dethroning The Exorcist from its long held position. The film grossed $701.8 million against a budget of $30-40 million. It Chapter Two was also a box office success. However, the sequel received mixed reviews from critics; Skarsgård and Hader’s received praise for their performances, but criticisms were aimed at the runtime, pacing, and scares.

There are currently no plans for a chapter 3 of IT. The story based on Stephen King’s novel, concluded with It Chapter Two. Furthermore, Stephen King reportedly has no plans to bring Pennywise back (via Screen Rant). Back in February, King shared an article about the upcoming prequel series, tweeting “Check it out”.

King’s best-selling, award-wining novel was first published back in 1986, and was first adapted for the screen with the 1990 TV mini-series, starring Tim Curry, who gave a terrifying portrayal of Pennywise the Clown. The story is set in a fictional town of Derry, Maine, and is about a group of friends, known as the Loser’s Club, who battle a Killer Clown called Pennywise, first as children, then as adults.

The twelfth season of American Horror Story is set to hit screens later this year, and here is everything we know about the upcoming instalment to the hit horror anthology series.

The horror show was renewed for three more seasons back in 2020 (via Deadline) by the Disney-owned network 20th Century Fox Television, so it will continue on to season 13. Hopefully, the show will be renewed for more seasons, with popular cast members returning. Until then, we have two more seasons to look forward to.

The popular anthology horror show created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk premiered in 2011, with Murder House and there have since been 10 seasons. Each season is a self-contained mini-series, mostly following a different set of characters and horror theme. Although, some characters from previous seasons do make a reappearance in later seasons, eg. S3:Coven and S8:Apocalypse.

The highly successful anthology show has enjoyed a mostly positive reception from critics, with much of the praise aimed at the cast, and the show has more than 100 award nominations. Some of the cast have won prestigious acting awards, such as Jessica Lange, who won two Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performances. Kathy Bates (Coven) and James Cromwell (Asylum), both earned an Emmy award for their performances. Lady Gaga, who starred in Hotel, won a Golden Globe Award for her performance in season 5.

The show has attracted quite a pool talented of actors, including: Kathy Bates, James Cromwell, Jessica Lange, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett, Adina Porter, Finn Wittrock, Jamie Brewer, Billie Lourd, and Leslie Grossman to name a few. Furthermore, it has helped launch other notable actors into stardom, such as 9 times reoccurring series favourite Evan Peters, who has recently won a Golden Globe Award for his terrifying portrayal of the titular character in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Lady Gaga, who had previously only appeared in music videos has also gone on to have a successful acting career since her appearance in the show.

Plot

Unlike previous seasons, the new series, titled Delicate, will be partly based on source material, specifically Danielle Valentine’s upcoming novel Delicate Condition. The novel is described as “a gripping thriller about a woman who becomes convinced that a sinister figure is going to great lengths to make sure her pregnancy never happens”. The upcoming novel has been described in a blurb by author Andrea Bartz as “the feminist update to Rosemary’s Baby we all needed.”(via The Hollywood Reporter).

Cast

As reported by the THR, Matt Czuchry has joined the season 12 cast after the cancellation of Fox’s The Resident. Emma Roberts, a series veteran is set to return after a four-year hiatus. Roberts has previously appeared in AHS seasons: Coven, Freak Show, Cult, Apocalypse and 1984.

It was recently announced (via THR) that Kim Kardashian has been cast to star in the new series. While no details about Kardashian’s role have been released, it was reported (via THR) that the show’s solo writer has written a role especially for her. This isn’t Kardashian’s first outing as an actor, the reality TV star has previously appeared in CSI: NY, Drop Dead Diva and Beyond the Break.

American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy said in a statement to THR: “Kim is among the biggest and brightest television stars in the world and we are thrilled to welcome her to the AHS family,”.

“Emma and I are excited about collaborating with this true force in the culture. Halley Feiffer has written a fun, stylish and ultimately terrifying role especially for Kim, and this season is ambitious and unlike anything we have ever done.”

Will any other series favourites be making a return? Series regular Sarah Paulson hinted in an interview with Variety that she may not be returning for a while.

“It’s not that I’m not open to it. I’m always open to it, but I feel like I’ve been doing it for a long time, and people might start getting sick of me in that world,” continuing, Paulson says “Let someone else scream and run and cry for a second. Other people can do that too! Also, my nervous system. There was a time when I was younger when I was like, ‘I can do this all night. I love it!’ Now I’m like, ‘Momma’s tired!” (via Variety).

There’s no news of Evan Peters returning for the twelfth season of the show as of yet. The actor took a break from the show (via Fansided), sitting out season 9, and returning for season 10. Peters did not star in season 11 instead starring in Netflix’s  Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

The show will be executive produced by co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, writer Halley Feiffer, Alexis Martin Woodall and Scott Robertson.

Release Date

While FX have not given an official release date yet, American Horror Story has traditionally premiered in September/October. Therefore, based on previous release dates, it is likely that the new instalment will arrive in autumn 2023. However, according to THR, filming is scheduled to begin shooting in New York City later in April and a summer release is anticipated.

A post-credits scene from The Walking Dead spin-off, A World Beyond, may be of significance to Daryl Dixon’s new spin-off show. The scene reveals evidence of other ‘smart’ variants and alludes to the virus origins in France.

In the scene, set in an abandoned French laboratory, we see a scientist reviewing a video of Dr. Jenner (Noah Emmerich) from the CDC on a laptop. We met Dr Jenner in Season 1 of The Walking Dead, where he served as the primary antagonist in two episodes. Jenner, a virologist, had taken refuge at the CDC facility, where he reluctantly, at the request of his dying wife, continued to work on finding a cure. Disillusioned and suicidal, Jenner tried to trap Rick and his group in the set-to-detonate facility as he believed it would be a peaceful death, eventually agreeing to let them go before he died in the blast.

In the video the scientist reviews, during the post-credits scene, Jenner seems much more optimistic about the research taking place in France. Jenner reveals that he has assessed the latest data from the French team on the use of:

“Cardiac plaques as a host medium for steroidal therapies to jump-start the circulatory system in the hopes of short-circuiting the brain or perhaps regaining function to cause nerve confusion is a fascinating approach.”

While the scientist is watching the video, a man with a gun interrupts her viewing. We learn from her there were at least two research teams, Primrose and Violet. The scientist reveals she was on the latter and had returned, hoping the Primrose team were still working on a cure. The man shoots her dead and quickly exits. Moments later, she re-awakens as a fast-moving variant, who turns and runs at the now-closed metal door and pounds on it furiously.

There are a couple of interesting things to note from this variant. Firstly, following her re-awakening, she seems to know where the door is, which indicates memory, and possibly some degree of higher-level cognitive function.

Secondly, the intensity the variant pounds on the metal door is enough to dent it. This ‘smart’ variant may have increased strength or it could be simply due to her being a fresh ‘walker’. Questions arise such as to whether this intensity will wear off as the decay sets in or whether supercharged variants even decay at the same rate with heightened brain and bodily function.

These French experiments could have led to the development of more dangerous variants on the continent and may be why the variant in the post-credits scene seems more aware and moves faster. Perhaps jump-starting the circulatory system using steroidal therapies leads to heightened brain and bodily function; this mutation then became transmissible. Voila! A new supercharged variant may be on the cards. If that’s the case, then Daryl may need to work on his cardio as he will have to literally sprint for his life, and he better hope the door he’s hiding behind is a strong one.

The scene also shows some French graffiti – “The dead were born here” implying that France may have played a significant role in the virus origin. Perhaps Daryl will visit this lab at some point, and uncover more information about the origins of the virus.

Fast zombie variants would certainly make things more interesting, as they would be more of a threat; forcing characters to make faster decisions will increase the intensity of the show. We’ve seen how dangerous situations can get with the usual walker variant, particularly in large numbers. A horde of runners would be on a nightmarish level, especially in a built-up area with a lot of dead-ends.

In the new spin-off, Daryl washes ashore in France and journeys across post-apocalyptic France. Ultimately, his plan to return home is met with complications along the way. Whether or not Daryl will encounter any supercharged ‘smart’ variants remains to be seen. Setting the show in Europe will give the franchise a fresh feel, and featuring ‘smart’ variants will make it even more compelling.

Norman Reedus is back as the titular Daryl Dixon. Clémence Poésy (In Bruges, Tenet) as Isabelle, a member of a progressive religious group with a dark past. Adam Nagaitis (The Terror, Chernobyl) as Quinn, a powerful underground nightclub owner. French actress Anne Charrier (Marseille) stars as Genet. Other cast members include Eriq Ebanouey as Fallou, Laika Blanc Francard as Sylvie, Romain Levi as Codron, and Louis Puech Scigliuzzi as Laurent.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is one of three new walking dead spin-offs currently in production. Manhattan set Dead City is due to premier in Summer 2023, and the Rick and Michonne spin-off is currently filming, and will debut in 2024.
