A prequel film, 28 Hours Later, focusing on the first few days of the outbreak would make an interesting addition to the franchise.

The “28 Days Later” franchise has become a beloved staple of the horror genre, known for its unique take on the zombie apocalypse and its intense, action-packed scenes. The first film was released in 2002, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, and follows the story of a virus outbreak that turns most of the population into violent, bloodthirsty infected.

In 2007, the franchise released its second instalment, “28 Weeks Later,” directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. The sequel takes place six months after the events of the first movie, with the virus seemingly contained and the survivors attempting to rebuild society in London.

While there have been rumours of a third instalment, nothing has been officially confirmed yet, leaving fans eager to see where the franchise will go next. Following Danny Boyle’s teasing a possible sequel to 28 Weeks Later, I began to wonder what a prequel for the franchise would look like. One that focuses on the the first few days of the outbreak would be a rip-roaring ride with hordes of infected chasing down survivors as the authorities try to get a grip on the outbreak.

At the beginning of 28 Weeks Later, we saw Robert Carlyle’s character Don, being chased by a horde of infected, as he escapes a farmhouse, leaving his wife to her fate. It is an outstanding opening to a horror film, one that really gets the heart pumping as we see the increasing horde come over the hill, gaining pace on Don as he desperately heads for the boat. A terrifying start to an otherwise ok follow-up, and some may argue the film peaked with its long opening scene.

In the first-film, 28 Days Later, we learn of different character’s experiences from when the outbreak first happened in their area. They tell of the confusion, chaos and terror as the infection ripped through crowds of people in airports and stations. A prequel could show us the outbreak as it spreads throughout the country.

Perhaps the most gripping part of the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake was the initial outbreak. It’s the adrenaline rush of the character’s escaping the initial chaos, confusion and danger, as they begin to realise the enormity of what is happening to their world.

The notion of a 28 Days Later prequel, especially one with the proposed title is not original. There are a few fan-made videos that conceptually focus on 28 hours after the initial outbreak.

While there are no known plans for a prequel, especially one so aptly titled as 28 Hours Later, there is definitely a film there to be made. There is still a large appetite for post-apocalyptic stories, especially films/shows that involve zombies/infected. If the franchise were to continue, revisiting the initial outbreak could be an option. If not a film, then maybe a TV series, one that focuses on different groups of survivors as they struggle through the first few days. Film to TV shows are always a possibility, only this week we learned that Stephen King’s It is getting a TV series prequel to the highly successful film adaptations.
